American Football IQ Weekly Quiz: Boundary or Field?
Football coaches use the width of the field to help communicate alignments, coverages and assignments.
This week’s American Football IQ quiz tests two basic terms players need to recognize quickly: boundary and field.
The Question
Look at the two shaded areas on the card.
What terminology is used to identify each shaded area?
Try to answer before revealing it below.

The Answer
A: Boundary
B: Field
The boundary is the short side of the field — the side where the ball is closer to the sideline.
The field is the wide side — the side with more space between the ball and the opposite sideline.

That difference matters because formations, coverage responsibilities and defensive alignments can all change depending on which side is the boundary and which side is the field.
The faster a player recognizes it, the faster they can process what the offense is showing and understand their assignment.
